Pointers Upset by River Falls in NCHA Semifinals

SUPERIOR – UW-River Falls defeated the fifth-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team tonight by a score of 2-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) O'Brien Cup Tournament Semifinals at Wessman Arena in Superior.

The Pointers fall to a record of 21-3-2. This will be the first time since 2001, the first year of the NCHA O'Brien Cup Tournament, which the Pointers will not be playing in the championship game. The Falcons improve to 17-8-2.

The Falcons got on the scoreboard in the first period when Kelly Snedeker scored a breakaway goal eight minutes into the period. The Pointers had an 8-7 shot advantage in the first period.

River Falls made the score 2-0 in the second period when with a scramble out in front of the net Jamie Briski put the puck in the goal just a minute into the period. Stevens Point had a 14-5 advantage in shots in the period, but could not capitalize.

The Pointers cut the lead to 2-1 when Michelle Sosnowski (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield Central) (Jr.-Plainfield, IL/Central) put in a rebound on the power play with 7:02 left in the third period. Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) (Jr.-Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) had the assist. It was Sosnowski's ninth goal in the last five games. The Pointers then had a bunch of good chances at the end of the game, but could not get the puck past River Falls' goaltender Cassi Campbell as the Falcons hung on to win 2-1.

The Pointers had a 35-15 shot advantage in the game. The Pointers were 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Falcons were 0-for-4.

d'Andra Phillips (Swartz Creek, MI/Swartz Creek) (So.-Swartz Creek, MI) suffered her first loss of the season in net as she had 13 saves. Cassi Campbell had 34 saves to earn the win for the Falcons.

The Pointers will play Lake Forest College in the third-place game tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. at Wessman Arena. The game can be seen on the web courtesy of the ifan sports network.
