Pointers Top the Yellowjackets

SUPERIOR – The 22nd-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team took care of business this afternoon as it defeated UW-Superior 78-60 at Mortorelli Gym.

The Pointers improve to 17-4 overall and 8-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The Pointers have won 26 straight over the Yellowjackets. Superior falls to 4-16 overall and 1-11 in the conference.

A Megan Pehler (Oregon/Oregon) (Sr.-Oregon) three-pointer gave the Pointers an early 5-0 lead. The Yellowjackets fought back and went on a 12-2 run to take a 12-7 lead. The Pointers and more specifically Laura Neuenfeldt (Two Rivers/Two Rivers) (Sr.-Two Rivers) went on a 10-0 run to make the score 17-12 halfway through the first half.

The Yellowjackets cut the Pointer lead to three with 7:33 left in the first half. However, the Pointers ended the first half on a 15-2 run to go into halftime with a 37-21 lead.

The Pointers had 18 points off of Superior turnovers, while the Yellowjackets had zero. Stevens Point shot 42 % in the first half and the Yellowjackets were 35 %.

The Pointers started the second half with a 12-0 run to build its lead to 49-21. Stevens Point led by as many 33 at the halfway point of the second half, but Superior went on a 19-3 run to cut that margin down to 16. The Pointers went on to win 78-60.

The Pointers shot 54 % in the second half to finish at 48 % for the game. They were 11-for-26 from beyond the three-point line and 9-for-14 from the free throw line. The Yellowjackets shot 40 % for the game. Superior had a 35-24 advantage on the glass, but committed 23 turnovers.

Haley Houghton (Wausau/Wausau East) (Sr.-Wausau/East) led the Pointers with a game-high 15 points. Laura Neuenfeldt (Two Rivers/Two Rivers) had 13 points and Ali Nicastro (Mondovi/Mondovi) (Sr.-Mondovi) added 12 points. Christin Coles (Hustisford/Hustisford) (Fr.-Hustisford) had a career-high 12 points off the bench. Jessi Sporle (Mineral Point/Mineral Point) (Jr.-Mineral Point) had a team-high five rebounds. Kelsey Thingvold led the Yellowjackets with 14 points.

The Pointer return home Wednesday night when they host UW-Eau Claire. It will be “Think Pink” night at Berg Gym for breast cancer awareness. Everyone attending is asked to wear pink. There will be raffles, giveaways, and more.
