STEVENS POINT – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team kept alive its chances for possibly hosting a first round playoff game as it tied UW-Superior 2-2 tonight at Willett Arena.
The Pointers overall record now stands at 14-6-4 and their Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) record is now 5-5-3. The Yellowjackets have an overall record of 12-5-7 and a NCHA record of 6-4-3.
It didn't take very long for the Pointers to get on the scoreboard as Nic Polaski (Delafield/Wasson) (Fr.-Delafield/Wasson) scored just 17 seconds into the contest to give the Pointers a 1-0 lead. Shane Foster (Madison/LaFollette) (Jr.-Madison/LaFollette) and Tim Manthey (Anoka, MN/Anoka) (Jr.-Anoka, MN) assisted on the goal. The fastest goal to start a game in team history is 10 seconds, which was done twice. Later in the period, the Yellowjackets would get a penalty shot. However, their attempt went high of the cage and score remained 1-0. Superior did tie it up with 34 seconds left in the period when Corey Stark scored.
In the second period, the Yellowjackets took the lead when Jesse Junkermeier redirected the puck into the net to make the score 2-1 at the 13:06-mark of the second period. The score remained that way into the third period until Pat Lee (Schaumburg, IL/) (So.-Schaumburg, IL) scored a highlight reel goal to tie the score 2-2 with 15:38 remaining. Sean Fish (Ramsey, MN/Anoka) (Jr.-Ramsey, MN/Anoka) and Tim Manthey (Anoka, MN/Anoka) assisted on the goal. The score stayed 2-2 at the end of regulation and the game went to overtime.
In overtime, Thomas Speer (Janesville/James Madison) (Fr.-Janesville/James Madison) came up big for the Pointers making a couple of tough saves to preserve the tie. The Yellowjackets out shot the Pointers 8-0 in the overtime session.
Speer finished with 30 saves to earn the tie as his record is now 12-3-4. Chad Beiswenger had 19 saves for the Yellowjackets. Both teams finished 0-for-3 on the power play as there were a total of 13 penalties called in the game.
The Pointers will play their final regular season game next Saturday when they face UW-Eau Claire. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
