SUPERIOR– The 11th-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team went up to UW-Superior and came away with an easy 95-65 victory as junior Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) (Jr.-Minocqua/Lakeland) went over 1,000 career points at Mortorelli Gym.
Rortvedt, who only needed four points to reach 1,000 career points, reached the milestone at the 14:48-mark of the first half. He is the 28th player in Pointer history to reach 1,000 career points. Senior Steve Hicklin (Sussex/Hamilton) (Sr.-Sussex/Hamilton) went over 1,000 points earlier this season.
The Pointers improve to an overall record of 17-4 and 9-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The 95 points is the second-highest point total for the Pointers this season. Stevens Point has won 10 consecutive games over the Yellowjackets. Superior falls to an overall record of 8-13 and 3-9 in the WIAC.
The Yellowjackets started out with a 5-0 lead, but the Pointers went on a 12-2 run to take a 12-7 lead with 15 minutes left in the first half. Stevens Point then went on a 6-0 run to lengthen its lead to 18-9 with 12:25 remaining. The Yellowjackets proceeded with an 8-0 run to tie the contest up at 22-22. The Pointers followed that with a 21-2 run to take a 43-24 lead with 3:29 left in the first half. Stevens Point went into halftime with a 53-31 lead.
The Pointers dominated the paint in the first half outscoring the Yellowjackets 24-4. Stevens Point was an astounding 71 % on 20-of-28 shooting in the first half. The Pointers were also 8-for-9 from the free throw line. The Yellowjackets shot 40 % in the first half and attempting only three free throws.
The Yellowjackets cut the lead to 13 with 16 minutes left in the game, but that's as close as they got. The Pointers instantly got the margin back up to 18 and built their lead towards the end of the game. Stevens Point ended the game on a 10-0 run to defeat Superior 95-65.
The Pointers finished with their second-best field goal percentage of the season at 61 %. The Pointers shot 62.3 % in their first game of the season. The Yellowjackets finished at 42 % for the game. The Pointers dominated the glass with a 37-22 advantage.
The Pointers had five players score in double-figures. Steve Hicklin (Sussex/Hamilton) led the way for Stevens Point with 18 points. Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) had 13 points, Bryan Beamish (Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) (Jr.-Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) had 14 points, Khalifa El-Amin (Milwaukee/Rufus King) (Jr.-Milwaukee/Rufus King) had 12 points, and Louis Hurd (Portage/Portage) (Fr.-Portage) had 11 points off the bench. El-Amin had a season-high eight assists and just one turnover. Hurd led the Pointers with six rebounds. Dan Culy had 18 points to lead the Yellowjackets.
The Pointers will stay on the road on Wednesday when they face UW-Eau Claire at Zorn Arena. The tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
