SUPERIOR – The third-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team had its 20-game unbeaten streak come to an end tonight with a 3-1 defeat to UW-Superior at Wessman Arena.
The Pointers drop to an overall record of 17-1-2 and 12-1-2 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA). The 20-game unbeaten streak was the longest streak in all of women's hockey and the second longest in team history. They were also the last team in the NCAA to suffer a defeat. The Yellowjackets improve to 15-4-1 and 10-2-1 in the NCHA. The Yellowjackets are now just five points back from the Pointers for first place in the conference.
The Yellowjackets took the lead with 7:08 left in the first period when Brianne Mosher scored a power play goal. Stevens Point came back to tie the game when Dana Carothers (Burnsville, MN/Burnsville) (Fr.-Burnsville, MN) scored her 11th goal of the season with 12:31 left in the second period. Michelle Sosnowski (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield Central) (Jr.-Plainfield, IL) and Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) (Jr.-Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) had the assists on the goal. Superior regained the lead 1:31 later on Gina Baranzelli power play goal to make the score 2-1. The Yellowjackets added an empty net goal with 1:06 left in the game as the Pointers fell 3-1.
Stevens Point had a 30-19 edge in shots. The Yellowjackets were 2-for-5 on the power play, while the Pointers were 0-for-3. Ann Hulme (Shaker Heights, OH/Phillips Exeter (NH)) (So.-Shaker Heights, OH/Philips Exeter, NH) had 16 saves in the loss for the Pointers as her record now stands at 11-1-1.
The Pointers will face the Yellowjackets again tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
