Two Goals in the Third Ends the Pointers Unbeaten Streak

STEVENS POINT – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team had its 11-game unbeaten streak come to an end as the College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) scored two goals in the third period to rally past the Pointers 2-1 tonight at Willett Arena.

The Pointers fall to an overall record of 14-6-3 and a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) record of 5-5-2. The 11-game unbeaten streak was the third longest in NCAA Division III and was the fifth longest in team history. The loss also snaps an eight-game unbeaten streak at Willett Arena. The Saints improve to 9-12-2 overall and 4-7-1 in the NCHA. The Saints have beaten the Pointers three straight times since losing the previous 44 meetings. It is the first win for the Saints at Willett Arena since the 1986-87 season.

The Pointers came out aggressive and took an early lead when Pat Lee (Schaumburg, IL/) (So.-Schaumburg, IL) scored a power play goal with 13:42 left in the first period. Jonathan Ralph (Chester, NJ/Shattuck St. Mary's) (Jr.-Chester, NJ/Shattuck St. Mary's) had the assist. The Pointers had a 9-8 shot advantage in the period.

The second period went by pretty quietly as there were only two penalties called and no goals scored. Stevens Point once again had the shot advantage at 14-11.

The Saints would get on the scoreboard when on a delayed penalty Jordan Chong scored to tie the contest 1-1 less than five minutes into the third period. St. Scholastica took the lead a little over two minutes later when Matt Stengl redirected a shot into the net to make the score 2-1. The Pointers would get a power play with less than three minutes remaining, but could not capitalize as the Saints hung on to a 2-1 win.

The Saints had a 15-8 shot advantage in the third period to finish with a 34-31 advantage for the game. The Pointers were 1-for-5 on the power play and the Saints were 0-for-2. Thomas Speer (Janesville/James Madison) (Fr.-Janesville/James Madison) had 32 saves in the loss for the Pointers. Steve Bounds had 30 saves to earn the win for the Saints.

The Pointers will host their final regular season home game tomorrow night when they face UW-Superior. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. at Willett Arena.
