Pointers Top the Blue Devils

STEVENS POINT – The 11th-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team had an easy time with UW-Stout tonight, winning by a score of 86-58 at Quandt Fieldhouse.

The Pointers put together a complete game scoring 43 points in both the first and second half. Stevens Point improves to 16-4 overall and 8-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The Blue Devils fall to 4-16 overall and 1-10 in the conference. The Pointers have won 12 of the last 13 meetings over Stout.

The Blue Devils got off to a fast start, hitting a pair of three-pointers to take an early 8-0 lead. A little later the Pointers went on an 8-0 run of their own to take their first lead at 15-13 with 12:38 left in the first half. Stout then went on a 7-0 run to take a five-point lead halfway through the half.

Stevens Point took the lead for good after a 9-0 run gave them a 27-22 lead with 7:38 left in the first half. The Pointers led by as many as 13 points in the half following a Matt Moses (Fond du Lac/St. Mary Springs) (So.-Fond du Lac/St. Mary Springs) layup. The Pointers went into halftime with a 43-33 advantage.

The Pointers shot 51.7 % in the half on 15-of-29 shooting and were 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Stevens Point had a 19-6 scoring edge in the paint and the Pointer bench had a 25-2 advantage. Louis Hurd (Portage/Portage) (Fr.-Portage) had eight points off the bench in the first half.

Stout kept the score within nine the first three minutes of the second half, but the Pointers put the game away with a 12-0 run over the span of two minutes to extend their lead to 61-40. Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) (Jr.-Minocqua/Lakeland), who missed the last two games due to injury, had 10 of the 12 points during that span. It just kept getting worse for the Blue Devils as the Pointers went on to win 86-58.

In addition to scoring the same amount of points in each half, Stevens Point shot almost identical in both halves as it shot 51.5 % in the second half. The Pointers were 12-for-28 on three-point attempts. They were also 10-for-12 from the free throw line. Stout shot 41 % for the game. The Blue Devils were 5-for-22 on three-point attempts.

Steve Hicklin (Sussex/Hamilton) (Sr.-Sussex/Hamilton) and Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) each had a game-high 18 points to lead Stevens Point. Rortvedt needs just four more points to reach 1,000 points for his career. Jerome Wotachek (Mishicot/Mishicot) (Jr.-Mishicot) had a team-high eight rebounds and Ross Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) (So.-Minocqua/Lakeland) led the Pointers with five assists. Jerrell Enerson-Matthews had 16 points to lead Stout.

The Pointers will be in action on Saturday when they take on UW-Superior in Superior. The tip-off is scheduled at approximately 5 p.m. following the women's game.
