Pointers in Sixth after Day One

SUPERIOR – The 10th-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's track and field team completed day one of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships held at the Lydia Thering Fieldhouse on the campus of UW-Superior.

UW-Whitewater has a narrow lead with 42 points after five events were scored on day one. UW-Platteville is in second with 40.5 points, UW-La Crosse is third with 32.5 points, UW-Oshkosh is fourth with 27.5 points, UW-Eau Claire is in fifth with 22.5 points, and the Pointers are in sixth with 17 points. UW-Superior, UW-Stout, and UW-River Falls round out the rest of the field.

Mark Cufaude (Evansville/Evansville) (So.-Evansville) had the best finish for Stevens Point on day one as he placed second in the pole vault, clearing a height of 15'-11”. Phil Richert (Andover, MN/Andover) (Jr.-Andover, MN) finished fifth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:00.95 seconds. Also collecting points on the day was the Pointers' “A” distance medley, whom finished fourth in a time of 10:28.20 seconds.

Pointers who qualified for the finals in their respective events include Keith Ingram (Milwaukee, WI/Riverside) (Fr.-Milwaukee/Riverside University) in the 55-meter dash. Nick Ver Duin (Sr.-Howards Grove) had the fastest time in the preliminaries of the 200-meter dash, posting a time of 22.32 seconds, which is the fastest time thus far in the conference. Keith Ingram (Milwaukee, WI/Riverside) and Pat Leonard (Sr.-Chicago, IL/Brother Rice) also qualified for the finals in that event.

Ver Duin also qualified for the finals in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.62 seconds. Brad Koback (Amherst/Amherst) (Jr.-Amherst) and Pat Leonard also qualified in that event. Adam Lang (Sheboygan/Sheboygan Lutheran) (So.-Sheboygan/Lutheran) qualified for the finals in the 800-meter run and Mike Dellemann (Oregon/Oregon) (Jr.-Oregon) advanced to the finals in the 55-meter hurdles.

The Pointers will compete in the second day of action at the WIAC Indoor Championships tomorrow at Lydia Thering Fieldhouse with events beginning at 9 a.m.
