STEVENS POINT – The 19th-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team used a 22-5 run to break a 38-38 tie to runaway from UW-Oshkosh tonight by a score of 84-62 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament Quarterfinals at Berg Gym.
The Pointers improve to 7-3 in WIAC Quarterfinal games and improve to 13-0 at home this season. Stevens Point now has a record of 22-4 overall. The 22 wins tie for the fourth-most in school history.
Both teams traded the lead early as there were 12 lead changes in the first 13 minutes of the game. Stevens Point then opened up a six-point lead after an 8-0 run made the score 24-18 with less than five minutes remaining in the first half. Oshkosh got the lead back down to two, but the Pointers went into halftime with a 30-26 lead.
The Titans shot a little better than the Pointers in the first half, shooting 35 % from the field, while the Stevens Point was 32 %. Oshkosh also had a 22-18 advantage on the glass, but committed 11 turnovers. The Pointers were 8-for-10 from the free throw line.
The Titans tied the contest a couple of times at 35-35 and 38-38 in the first three minutes of the second half. Janell Van Gomple (DeForest/DeForest) (Jr.-DeForest) then took over for Stevens Point as she led the Pointers to a 22-5 run over the next six minutes to make the score 60-43. Van Gomple scored 11 of the 22 points during that run.
Oshkosh tried to get back in the game with a 10-0 run to cut the Stevens Point lead to 60-53. However, the Pointers followed that with an 8-0 run and then a pair of 7-0 runs as they won going away 84-62.
The Pointer bench outscored the Titan bench 36-0 in the second half and 44-2 for the game. Stevens Point shot 50 % in the second half to finish at 42 % for the game. The Pointers came in as the best free throw shooting team in conference and they shot above their average tonight, going 24-for-31 at the line.
Janell Van Gomple (DeForest/DeForest) led the Pointers by matching a career-high with 16 points. She has had season-highs in scoring the last two games. Laura Neuenfeldt (Two Rivers/Two Rivers) (Sr.-Two Rivers) was the only other Pointer in double-figures as she had 13 points. Haley Houghton (Wausau/Wausau East) (Sr.-Wausau/East) had a good all-around effort as she had nine points, six rebounds, and eight assists. Jessi Sporle (Mineral Point/Mineral Point) (Jr.-Mineral Point) also had nine points and six rebounds. Whitney Tyriver led the Titans with 19 points.
The Pointers will head down to Whitewater to face the No. 2-seeded Warhawks Thursday Night at Kachel Gym. Whitewater defeated UW-Platteville tonight by a score of 93-53. The tip-off for Thursday's WIAC Semifinal game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
