STEVENS POINT – Michelle Sosnowski (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield Central) (Jr.-Plainfield, IL/Central) registered her first career hat trick as the fifth-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team defeated Adrian College (Mich.) 5-1 this afternoon in the regular season finale at Ice Hawks Arena.
The Pointers end the regular season with a 21-2-2 overall record, while Adrian finishes at 11-11-2. The Pointers will have to go up to UW-Superior for the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) O'Brien Cup Playoffs as the Yellowjackets captured the regular season title with a 6-3 victory over Finlandia this afternoon.
Sosnowski got the scoring started for the Pointers as she scored an even-handed goal with 12:26 left in the opening period. Sarah Phillips (Kelowna, B.C./St. George's School (RI)) (So.-Kelowna, B.C./St. George's School, RI) and Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) (Jr.-Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) assisted the goal. Stevens Point added its first power play goal of the afternoon when Jamie Lewandowski (Rolling Meadows, IL/Fremd) (Sr.-Rolling Meadows, IL/Fremd) scored with 6:35 left in the first period.
Dana Carothers (Burnsville, MN/Burnsville) (Fr.-Burnsville, MN) added another power play goal 1:04 seconds later to make the score 3-0. Grossmann and Lauren Kellin (Grand Rapids, MN/Grand Rapids) (Sr.-Grand Rapids, MN) had the assists. Sosnowski scored her second goal of the period with 23 seconds left in the period on the power play to give the Pointers a 4-0 lead at the first intermission.
Stevens Point scored its fourth power play goal of the contest when Sosnowski completed the hat trick with a goal just over a minute into the second period to make the score 5-0. Sosnowski has scored eight goals in the last four games. Adrian netted its lone goal at 15:19 when Steph Dimini scored on the power play. That would be the final score as the Pointers won 5-1.
d'Andra Phillips (Swartz Creek, MI/Swartz Creek) (So.-Swartz Creek, MI) had 13 saves to improve to 8-0-1 this season. Dana Timm had 32 saves for the Bulldogs in the defeat. Stevens Point out shot Adrian 37-14 in the game. There were a total of 17 penalties with the Pointers going 4-for-10 on the power play. Stevens Point has now eclipsed the school record for power play goals in a season with 32 this year. The previous record was 30, which was set last season. The four power play goals also tie a record for the most scored in a game. Stevens Point scored four goals with the man advantage against Finlandia earlier this season.
The Pointers will be the two-seed in the NCHA O'Brien Cup Playoffs. They will have the bye on Friday and will face the second-lowest remaining seed Saturday at Wessman Arena.
