Pointers Need Overtime to Defeat Adrian

STEVENS POINT – Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) (Jr.-Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) scored just 40 seconds into overtime as the fifth-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team defeated Adrian College 2-1 tonight at Ice Hawks Arena.

The Pointers improve to an overall record of 20-2-2. Stevens Point reaches 20 wins for the fourth consecutive season and the sixth time in program history. Adrian falls to 11-10-2 overall.

Stevens Point got 19 shots on goal in the first period, but came up empty as the contest remained scoreless into the second period. In the second, Michelle Sosnowski (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield Central) (Jr.-Plainfield, IL/Central) scored an unassisted shorthanded goal a little over two minutes into the period to make the score 1-0 Stevens Point. It was Sosnowski's fifth goal in the last three games. The Bulldogs tied it at 1-1 with 3:21 left in the second period with a power play goal by Ainsley Coon.

The Pointers kept the pressure on in the third period with 18 shots on goal, but the score remained at 1-1 at the end of regulation, so we went to overtime. In overtime, Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) ended it quick with a goal 40 seconds into the extra session to make the final score 2-1. Dana Carothers (Burnsville, MN/Burnsville) (Fr.-Burnsville, MN) assisted the goal. It is the first time this season the Pointers have won a game that has gone to overtime. It is Grossmann's second overtime goal of her career.

The Pointers outshot the Bulldogs 58-29 in the game. Ann Hulme (Shaker Heights, OH/Phillips Exeter (NH)) (So.-Shaker Heights, OH/Phillips Exeter, NH) had 28 saves in net for the Pointers to improve to 13-2-1 this season. Dana Timm had 56 saves in the loss for Adrian. The Pointers were 0-for-6 on the power play, while the Bulldogs were 1-for-5.

The Pointers will play Adrian again tomorrow in the regular season finale. The puck drops at 2:30 p.m. at Ice Hawks Arena.
