MENOMONIE – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team saw its season comes to an end tonight with a 7-1 loss at UW-Stout in game two of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) Peters Cup Quarterfinals at the Dunn County Ice Arena.
The Pointers finish with an overall record of 14-9-4. The 14 wins were the most since the 2002-03 season. It was a seven-win improvement in head coach Wil Nichol's first season. The Pointers did not have a senior on the roster so the future looks bright for Stevens Point. The Blue Devils continue and will face UW-Eau Claire in the Peters Cup semifinals next Friday.
The Pointers got on the scoreboard first tonight as Garrett Suter (Madison/Oregon) (Fr.-Madison/Oregon) scored a power play goal with 7:27 left in the first period. Matt Stendahl (Forest Lake, MN/Forest Lake) (Jr.-Forest Lake, MN) had the assist. However, Stout added two power play goals in the final 3:20 of the first period to take a 2-1 lead at the first intermission.
The lone goal of the second period came with a half-second left in the period when Scott Motz scored a power play goal. Then just like last night, the Blue Devils added four goals in the final period as they advance in the Peters Cup playoffs by a score of 7-1. The three-highest goal totals allowed by Stevens Point this season have come against UW-Stout.
Stout had a 32-29 edge in shots. Thomas Speer (Janesville/James Madison) (Fr.-Janesville/James Madison) had 25 saves in the loss. Speer had a spectacular freshman campaign as he went 12-5-4 with four shutouts and was in the top 10 in NCAA Division III in goals against average and save percentage for most of the season.
