MENOMONIE – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team had a 4-2 lead in the second period, but UW-Stout scored the final six goals to win game one of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) Peters Cup Quarterfinals by a score of 8-4 tonight at the Dunn County Ice Arena.
It is the first time this season the Pointers have scored four goals in a contest and lost. The eight goals were the most allowed all season and the most since they allowed eight against Augsburg last season.
Nic Polaski (Delafield/Wasson) (Fr.-Delafield/Wasson) put the Pointers on the scoreboard 2:38 seconds into the game with an evenhanded goal. Chris Conway (Westminster, CO/Northwood) (So.-Westminster, CO/Northwood) had the assist. The Blue Devils tied the game at 1-1 with 11:04 left in the first period. Stevens Point regained the lead when Brett Beckfeld (Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) (Jr.-Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) scored with 6:27 left in the first period. Josh Calleja (New Richmond/New Richmond) (So.-New Richmond) and Tim Manthey (Anoka, MN/Anoka) (Jr.-Anoka, MN) assisted the goal. Stout tied it back up with 39 seconds left in the first period to make the score 2-2 at the first intermission.
Josh Calleja (New Richmond/New Richmond) gave the Pointers a 3-2 lead early in the second period with an evenhanded goal four minutes into the period. Russell Law (Bay City, MI/Shattuck (MN)) (Jr.-Bay City, MI/Shattuck St. Mary's, MN) had the assist. Calleja then scored again just 1:25 seconds later on power play goal to give Stevens Point a 4-2 lead. Pat Lee (Schaumburg, IL/) (So.-Schaumburg, IL) and Tim Manthey (Anoka, MN/Anoka) had the assists. However, the Blue Devils scored a pair of power goals in the final 5:26 seconds of the second period, including a goal with 10 seconds left in the period to make the score 4-4 at the second intermission.
Stout took its first lead of the game just a minute into the third period to make the score 5-4. The Blue Devils than added a pair of goals within 53 seconds of each other to make the score 7-4. Stout added its final goal of the contest with 2:45 left in the game to make the final 8-4.
The Blue Devils had a 35-28 shot advantage. Thomas Speer (Janesville/James Madison) (Fr.-Janesville/James Madison) had 25 saves in 47 minutes of action for the Pointers and Mike Stone came in relief for Stout and had 17 saves to earn the win. There were 30 combined penalties in the contest with 20 coming in the final period. Stevens Point was 1-for-7 on the power play and Stout was 2-for-8.
The Pointers and Blue Devils will play game two tomorrow night at the Dunn County Ice Arena. The action begins at 7:30 p.m. If the Pointers win game two, both teams will play a 20-minute mini-game immediately following the contest.
