Pointers Pick up Big Road Win over La Crosse

LA CROSSE – The 20th-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team went on the road and took down a streaking UW-La Crosse team by a score 62-48 tonight at Mitchell Hall.

The Pointers improve to 20-4 overall and 11-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. It is the Pointers seventh 20-win season in the last eight years. The Eagles fall to a record of 14-11 overall and 9-7 in the conference. The Pointers have won 16 of the last 17 against the Eagles.

It didn't start out good for the Pointers as they fell behind by a score of 8-0. Stevens Point then went on an 8-2 run to cut the La Crosse lead to 10-8. The Pointers took their first lead of the game when Laura Neuenfeldt (Two Rivers/Two Rivers) (Sr.-Two Rivers) hit a three-pointer halfway through the first half to make the score 15-14. Stevens Point later closed the half on an 8-2 run to go into halftime with a 31-22 lead.

The Pointers shot 46 % in the first half and had a 14-10 scoring edge in the paint. The Eagles shot 42 % from the field in the half and committed 11 turnovers.

Stevens Point scored the first four points of the second half to go up by 13. La Crosse cut the lead down to nine on a couple of occasions, but the Pointers opened up their margin to 18 with 8:30 remaining in the game. The lead never got below double-figures the rest of the way as the Pointers won 62-48.

Stevens Point shot 38 % for the game, but was 10-for-13 from the free throw line. The Pointers had a big advantage on the boards at 39-29. Stevens Point had 17 offensive rebounds, compared to seven for La Crosse.

Laura Neuenfeldt (Two Rivers/Two Rivers) and Chelsea Kranz (Columbus/Columbus) (Sr.-Columbus) were the only Pointers to score in double-figures as they both had 10 points. Jessi Sporle (Mineral Point/Mineral Point) (Jr.-Mineral Point) had eight points and 10 rebounds. Haley Houghton (Wausau/Wausau East) (Sr.-Wausau/East) added nine points. Mackenzie Hunter had a game-high 16 points for the Eagles.

The Pointers conclude their regular season Saturday at UW-Platteville. The tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
