Pointers Rally from Three Goals Down to Tie the Falcons

RIVER FALLS – The third-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team trailed 3-0 in the second period, but added a goal in the second and two more in the third period to tie UW-River Falls 3-3 this afternoon at Hunt Arena.

The Pointers improve to 16-0-2 overall and 12-0-2 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA). The Pointers have not lost in 19 straight games dating back to last season, which is the longest streak in all of women's college hockey. The Falcons drop to 10-7-2 overall and 6-5-1 in the NCHA. It is just the second time since the season opener that the Pointers have allowed more than one goal in a game.

River Falls got ahead of the Pointers early as Jamie Briski scored a shorthanded goal just five minutes into the contest. It was the first shorthanded goal given up this season by the Pointers. The Falcons scored again with 2:08 remaining in the first period when Cassie LeBlanc scored a power play goal to make the score 2-0. Stevens Point did out shoot the Falcons 14-8 in the period.

The Falcons extended their lead to 3-0 with another power play goal by Stefanie Schmitz with six minutes left in the second period. The Pointers then got on the scoreboard with 3:38 left in the period when Katy Lankey (Baraboo/Baraboo) (Sr.-Baraboo) scored a power play goal to make the score 3-1. Jess Suter (Waunakee/Waunakee) (Sr.-Waunakee) and Kellye Nelson (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) (So.-Lino Lakes/Centennial) had the assists on the play. The Pointers had a 9-3 edge in shots in the second period.

Stevens Point cut the lead to 3-2 halfway through the third period when Jessica Edward (Sherrard, IL/Shattuck St. Mary's (MN)) (So.-Sherrard, IL/Shattuck St. Mary's) scored an unassisted goal. The Pointers then tied it up with 3:57 left in regulation when Lankey scored her second goal of the game. It is her first multi-goal game of the season. Jess Suter (Waunakee/Waunakee) had the assist. The Pointers had a 13-4 shot advantage in the third period as the game went to overtime.

In overtime, the Pointers had four shots on goal, while River Falls was held to none. However, the Pointers were unable to get the puck in the net as the game ended in a 3-3 tie.

Ann Hulme (Shaker Heights, OH/Phillips Exeter (NH)) (Shaker Heights, OH/Phillips Exeter, NH) had 12 saves to earn the tie for the Pointers. Cassi Campbell had 37 saves for the Falcons. There were a total of seven penalties in the game. Stevens Point was 1-for-3 on the power play and River Falls was 2-for-4.

The Pointers will have a showdown with fourth-ranked Gustavus Adolphus (MN) on Tuesday at Ice Hawks Arena. The Pointers defeated the Golden Gusties 5-1 in the second game of the season. That is Gustavus' only loss of the season. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
