Box Score

STEVENS POINT – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team kept its unbeaten streak going as Josh Calleja (New Richmond/New Richmond) (So.-New Richmond) scored with 2:53 left in regulation to give the Pointers a 1-1 tie against No. 12 UW-Stout tonight at Willett Arena.

The Pointers record now stands at 14-5-3 overall and 5-4-2 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA). The Pointers run their unbeaten steak to 11 games. That is the longest since they went 16 games without a loss during the 1991-92 season. The Blue Devils fall to 14-6-2 overall and 6-4-1 in the NCHA. The Blue Devils remain one point ahead of the Pointers for third place in the conference.

The first period went by pretty quietly as there was only one penalty in the period and the Blue Devils out shot the Pointers 8-7. Things started to pickup in the second period as there were 10 penalties in the period, five for each team. Just like last night the Pointers controlled the puck for most of the period and had a 13-6 shooting edge.

The game remained scoreless well into the third period until Stout snuck a wrist shot into the net with 5:21 left in regulation to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead. Then after matching minor penalties were called, the Pointers had the face-off on Stout's end. Pat Lee (Schaumburg, IL/) (So.-Schaumburg, IL) won the face-off and shoveled the puck in front of the net where Josh Calleja (New Richmond/New Richmond) beat the goaltender to tie the contest up 1-1 with 2:53 left in regulation.

The game then headed to overtime, where the Blue Devils had a 5-4 shot advantage and had a couple good looks at the net, but could not capitalize as the game ended in a 1-1 tie. The Pointers went 1-0-2 against the No. 1, 6, and 12-ranked teams in the country the last three games to pickup four quality points.

Thomas Speer (Janesville/James Madison) (Fr.-Janesville/James Madison) had 25 saves to earn the tie and improve his record to 12-2-3. Mike Stone had 29 saves for the Blue Devils. Both teams went a combined 0-for-8 on the power play. There were a total of 16 penalties in the contest.

The Pointers will be at home again Friday night when they host St. Scholastica at Willett Arena. All fans attending are asked to wear white to “white out” the Willett. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
