EAU CLAIRE – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team fell to UW-Eau Claire tonight by a score of 2-0 at Hobbs Ice Arena and in doing so fell to sixth in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) standings.
The Pointers end the regular season with a 14-7-4 overall record and a 5-6-3 conference record. The Blugolds finish with a 10-14-1 overall record and a 6-7-1 conference record. Both the Pointers and the Blugolds finish with 13 points, but since the Blugolds have more NCHA wins they move to the fifth seed.
The Blugolds got there first goal of the game less than six minutes into the first period when Sam Bauler scored an evenhanded goal. The Blugolds had a 20-5 shot advantage in the first period.
The 1-0 score remained that way until the end of the second period when the Blugolds' Sean Garrity scored a power play goal with 2:52 left in the period. Eau Claire had a 12-9 shot advantage in the second period.
The Pointers were unable to muster any offense in the third period as the Blugolds went on to win 2-0.
Eau Claire had a 42-19 shot advantage for the game. There were a total of 19 penalties called in the contest. Stevens Point went 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Blugolds went 1-for-5. Thomas Speer (Janesville/James Madison) (Fr.-Janesville/James Madison) had 40 saves in the loss for the Pointers. Tyler Brigl had 19 saves to earn the win for Eau Claire.
The Pointers will face UW-Stout in Menomonie next Friday for the quarterfinals of the NCHA Tournament. It will be game one of the series. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
