Pointers Score a Pair Late to Down Foresters

STEVENS POINT – The fourth-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team scored two goals in the final 3:29 to defeat Lake Forest College (Ill.) tonight by a score 5-3 at Ice Hawks Arena.

The win snaps a two-game losing streak as the Pointers improve to an overall record of 18-2-2 and a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) record of 13-2-2. The Foresters fall to 9-9-4 overall and 5-7-3 in the NCHA.

Lake Forest scored first on the night when Courtney DeHoey scored a power play goal with 13:40 left in the first period. Stevens Point tied the contest at 1-1 less than two minutes later when Katy Lankey (Baraboo/Baraboo) (Sr.-Baraboo) hit a slow rolling puck past the goaltender. Kellye Nelson (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) (So.-Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) had the assist. The Pointers took the lead on the power play when Dana Carothers (Burnsville, MN/Burnsville) (Fr.-Burnsville, MN) scored with less than seven minutes left in the period to make the score 2-1. Michelle Sosnowski (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield Central) (Jr.-Plainfield, IL/Central) had the assist.

In the second period, Stevens Point extended its lead to 3-1 when Sosnowski put a loose puck in the net. Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) (Jr.-Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) had the assist. That was the lone goal scored in the period.

Lake Forest came out strong in the third as Kerry Gotowka scored a power play goal just 1:30 into the period to cut the Pointer margin down to 3-2. The Foresters tied the game up at 3-3 when Sam Pinsonneault went top shelf with 14:38 remaining in regulation.

After a Lake Forest hooking penalty with less than four minutes to play, Michelle Sosnowski (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield Central) scored her second goal of the game when she redirected the puck into the net to make the score 4-3 Stevens point with 3:29 left. Just 1:44 later, the Pointers gave themselves some breathing room when Kellye Nelson (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) put a centering pass from Katy Lankey (Baraboo/Baraboo) past the goaltender to make the final score 5-3.

The Pointers out shot the Foresters 38-20 in the game, including 18-7 in the third period. Both teams combined for nine penalties with Stevens Point going 2-for-4 on the power play and Lake Forest going 2-for-5.

Ann Hulme (Shaker Heights, OH/Phillips Exeter (NH)) (So.-Shaker Heights, OH/Phillips Exeter, NH) had 17 saves to improve to 12-2-1 this season, while Alyssa Wintermute had 33 saves in the loss.

The Pointers will host Lake Forest again tomorrow afternoon at Ice Hawks Arena. It will be the final NCHA regular season game for the Pointers. The puck drops at 2:30 p.m.
