Pointers Skate Past the Blugolds to Remain Unbeaten

EAU CLAIRE – The third-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team scored three second period goals on its way to defeating UW-Eau Claire 6-1 tonight at the Hobbs Ice Center.

The Pointers run their unbeaten streak to 18 games dating back to last season. The Pointers are 16-0-1 overall this season and 12-0-1 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) action. The Blugolds fall for the third time this season to Stevens Point and drop to an overall record of 10-9-0 and 7-5-0 in the conference.

Tracy Butler (Marshfield/Marshfield) (So.-Marshfield) scored the Pointers first goal with 12 minutes left in the first period. Katy Lankey (Baraboo/Baraboo) (Sr.-Baraboo) and Kellye Nelson (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) (So.-Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) had the assists. A little over five minutes later Dana Carothers (Burnsville, MN/Burnsville) (Fr.-Burnsville, MN) put Stevens Point up 2-0. Rachael Graves (Bemidji, MN/Bemidji) (Jr.-Bemidji, MN) and Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) (Jr.-Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) had the assists. The Blugolds scored a power play goal 3:51 left in the period to make the score 2-1 Stevens Point at the first intermission.

Jess Suter (Waunakee/Waunakee) (Sr.-Waunakee) extended the Pointer lead back to two goals 56 seconds into the second period with an evenhanded goal. Graves and Nelson picked up their second assists of the night. Lankey then scored 1:11 later to make the score 4-1. Nelson added the final goal of the second period at the 3:25-mark to give the Pointers a 5-1 lead. Stevens Point out shot Eau Claire 13-1 in the second period.
Carothers scored the final goal of the contest, her second of the night, on the power play just four minutes into the third period as the Pointers cruised to a 6-1 victory.

Stevens Point out shot Eau Claire 32-14 in the game. Ann Hulme (Shaker Heights, OH/Phillips Exeter (NH)) (So.-Shaker Heights, OH/Phillips Exeter, NJ) had 13 saves to improve to 10-0-0 this season. Danika Porter had 19 saves in 40 minutes of action and Lindsay Savat had seven saves in 20 minutes of action for the Blugolds.

The Pointers will be at River Falls tomorrow afternoon to face the Falcons. The action gets underway at 3:05 p.m.
