STEVENS POINT - The No. 15 St. Scholastica Saints jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and held off the No. 9 Pointers in a 2-1 upset on Saturday evening at K.B. Willett Arena.
The Saints struck first, as Dustin DeGagne knocked home a goal with :23 left in the first period on passes from Jordan Baird and Jeff Gagnon to give the Saints an early 1-0 advantage.
In the second, Baird scored a goal of his own on passes from Trevor Geiger and Gagnon to extend the Saints lead to 2-0 early in the second period.
But the Pointers would not go quietly as Sean Fish (Ramsey, MN/Anoka) (Ramsey, MN) scored his fifth goal of the year on passes from Garrett Suter (Madison/Oregon) (Madison) and Russell Law (Bay City, MI/Shattuck (MN)) (Bay City, MI) to cut the Saints lead in half at 2-1.
That would cap off the scoring in the game, as St. Scholastica was able to hold on for the victory thanks to 27 saves by goalie Steve Bounds. Thomas Speer (Janesville/James Madison) recorded 29 saves in net for the Pointers.
The Pointers will host Gustavus Adolphus in their next game on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at K.B. Willett Arena.
