SUPERIOR - UW-Stevens Point fell behind 2-0 but battled back with two third period goals to tie the score at 2-2 and held on in overtime to force a tie with the Yellowjackets in National Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) women's hockey action Saturday afternoon.
After a scoreless first period, the Yellowjackets got on the board near the end of the second period, scoring a shorthanded goal at 16:09 to take the 1-0 lead. In the third period, Superior's Jodi Holland netted a power play goal with just over 12 minutes remaining in the game to take a 2-0 lead.
From there the Pointers took over, as
Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) (Lindstrom, Minn.) netted a power play goal at the 10:25 mark, the 18th of her career, one ahead of coach
Ann Ninnemann in the Pointer record books, and
Erin Marvin (Shoreview, MN/Mounds View) (Shoreview, Minn.) tied it up at two at the 15:42 mark.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net after that, as both goalkeepers turned away shots in the overtime period to preserve the tie.
d'Andra Phillips (Swartz Creek, MI/Swartz Creek) (Swartz Creek, Mich.) netted 37 saves between the pipes for the Pointers while her counterpart Rikkie Nespor tallied 25 for the Yellowjackets.
UW-Stevens Point (4-1-2, 3-1-1 NCHA) returns to action returns to action on Dec. 7 when they face Finlandia in Hancock, Mich. at 1:15 p.m.
