STEVENS POINT - The No. 2 UW-Superior Yellowjackets outshot No. 9 UW-Stevens Point 31-24 as they grabbed a 3-1 victory at K.B. Willett arena Friday evening in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) men's hockey action.
The Yellowjackets came out hot, scoring the first two goals of the game. The first goal was notched at 3:29 when Jeff Herman found the back of the net on passes from Eric Bausano and Braden Desmet. Desmet then scored a goal of his own on a pass from Bausano to give the Yellowjackets a 2-0 advantage.
The Pointers didn't get their first shot off until the 11:11 mark in the first period, but it was a good one as
Jon Madden (Brighton, MI/Howell) (Brighton, MI) scored on a
Matt Stendahl (Forest Lake, MN/Forest Lake) (Forest Lake, MN) pass to cut the Yellowjackets lead in half at 2-1.
Neither team was willing to give much ground in the second period, as the game transitioned into a defensive struggle, but the Yellowjackets finally broke through 17:48 into the frame when Ryan Kuntz punched in goal to extend the Superior lead to 3-1.
The Pointers fought frantically to come back in the third period as they outshot the Yellowjackets 12-9 in the final stanza. But it wasn't enough as the Yellowjackets defense held up to secure the victory.
Thomas Speer (Janesville/James Madison) (Janesville) had 28 saves in goal for the Pointers, while Chad Beiswenger recorded 23 saves in the win.
The victory moves Superior to 11-1-1 overall, and 5-0-0 in the NCHA while the loss drops the Pointers to 8-3-0 overall, and 3-2 in the NCHA.
In their next matchup, the Pointers will host No. 15 St. Scholastica on Saturday at 7:30 at K.B. Willett Arena.
