STEVENS POINT - The Pointers used a 12-0 run midway through the first half to turn a seven point deficit into a five point advantage and never turned back, pulling ahead by as many as 14 down the stretch and kept the Eagles of Edgewood at bay, cruising to the 72-59 victory in non-conference action Tuesday evening.
In what on paper looked like an easy win for the Pointers turned out to be anything but through much of the first half. The visiting Eagles jumped ahead by five (9-4) in the games first 2:35 and kept the Pointers down, building a seven point lead, 22-15, with 8:37 remaining.
But then the Pointers offense came alive, sparked in part by freshman
Cassie Bandow (Plover, WI/Pacelli) (Plover), who connected on a three-point basket that sparked a 12-0 run, catapulting UWSP into a 27-22 lead with just 3:41 remaining in the opening period. Edgewood fought back, cutting the Pointer lead to just two, 31-29, heading into the locker room.
In the second, both teams battled back-and-forth early, but UWSP slowly pulled ahead by nine midway through the half and led by as many as 16 with :08 remaining as the Pointers earned the 13 point victory.
Leading the way for the Pointers was
Jessi Sporle (Mineral Point/Mineral Point) (Mineral Point) who finished with 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor and also pulled in six rebounds.
Andrea Flease (New London/New London) (New London) added 15 points and five assists off the bench while
Britta Petersen (Luck/Luck) (Luck) finished with 13 points and three rebounds. Bandow finished with 10 points and was the team's leading rebounder, pulling down eight.
For Edgewood, Ashley Averkamp led all scorers with 25 while Megan Scheele added 13 points and six rebounds in the loss.
The Pointers (9-1) will now hit the road for a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match-up this weekend with the Titans of UW-Oshkosh. The Eagles (4-5) head to Nassau, Bahamas for the Great Bahamas Goombay Shootout.
