Pioneers Upset No. 5 Pointers 85-71

Box Score
STEVENS POINT - The Pioneers of Carroll University shot a blazing 58 percent from the floor and frustrated the Pointers offense en route to an 85-71 victory over No. 5 UW-Stevens Point Tuesday evening at Quandt Fieldhouse.

Both teams traded baskets early on, as they battled to a 14-14 tie six minutes into the contest. The Pioneers went on an offensive spurt from there, opening a 34-21 lead over the next ten minutes.
The Pointers kept it close and closed out the half on a 13-6 run to cut the lead to 40-34 at halftime. The Pioneers grabbed the lead at the break thanks to their hot shooting as they went 16-27 from the floor and a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line.

Both teams came out firing in the second half, as 27 points were scored in the first five minutes of the frame putting the score at 55-48 in favor of Carroll.

The Pointers tried to crawl back, but they went on a big scoring draught in the middle of the first half. From the 15 minute mark to the six minute mark, the Pointers mustered only 12 points, while Carroll continued to make clutch shots on their end.

UWSP cut the deficit to 65-72 with 4:19 remaining, but Carroll took over from there and went on to claim the big non-conference victory.

The Pioneers were led by John Hoch's game-high 28 points and Wes Ladwig's 27 points. Josh Gould led the way on the glass, grabbing 11 rebounds and chipping in six points.

The Pointers got 22 points and 10 rebounds from Louis Hurd (Portage/Portage) (Portage) off the bench, along with 17 points and five rebounds from Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) (Minocqua). The Pointers committed eight more fouls in the game, and went just 4-9 from the line compared to a 20-25 effort from the charity stripe for the Pioneers.

The Pointers (8-2) return to WIAC action in their next game when they travel to take on the Titans of UW-Oshkosh on Jan. 3 at 1 p.m.
