STEVENS POINT - UW-Stevens Point got 51 of their 93 points on Saturday from the bench as
Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee/Rufus King) (Milwaukee) went 7-for-7 from the floor for a career-high 16 points and
Louis Hurd (Portage/Portage) (Portage) returned from a foot injury to score 15 in his season debut to lead the Pointers over Edgewood College 93-63.
After jumping out to an 8-2 lead in the game's early minutes, the Eagles of Edgewood tied the game at 13 with 13:00 remaining before the Pointers, sparked by their bench play, went on a 20-7 run to open up an 18-point lead with just over four minutes remaining in the half, sparked in part by the return of Hurd to the lineup. Edgewood started to climb back before the half, cutting the deficit to 13, 43-30, heading into the halftime locker room.
In the second half, it was all Pointers, as UWSP continued to open the gap, capitalizing on 22 Eagle turnovers to score 31 points as they cruised to the 30-point non-conference victory, 93-63.
The Pointers also out-rebounded the Eagles by 12, including a plus-7 margin on the offensive glass for 18 second-chance points. UWSP shot 60.3 percent from the floor for the game, including 42.3 from beyond the arch en route to their 16th victory over the Eagles in series history.
Jenkins added three rebounds and two assists to his game-high 16 points while
Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) (Minocqua) had 15 to match Hurd's point total off the bench.
Vinny Ritchay (Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) (Wisconsin Rapids) added a career-high 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the floor including 2-of-2 from three-point land in the win.
Brock Bidlingmaier (Monroe) led the way for Edgewood, pouring in a team-high 14 points. Kent Faurote (Cassville) finished with 13 and was tied for the team lead in rebounds with three.
UW-Stevens Point (8-1, 2-0 WIAC) returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 30 when they host Carroll University at 7 p.m. in non-conference play at the Quandt Fieldhouse.
