Box Score
STEVENS POINT – The Pointers battled back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game at three heading into the third period, but three third period goals by Gustavus Adolphus were too much for the Pointers to handle as the visiting Golden Gusties defeated the Pointers 6-3 in non-conference men's hockey action Saturday night.
The Pointers got on the board first, as
Jon Madden (Brighton, MI/Howell) (Brighton, Mich.) scored just 4:50 into the game. Gustavus came roaring back, notching two first period goals of their own to take a 2-1 lead after the first period.
In the second, the Golden Gusties added a power play goal five minutes in to take a 3-1 advantage. But the Pointers were not finished, as
Luke Nesper (Eagle River, WI/Northland Pines) (Eagle River) and
Matt Stendahl (Forest Lake, MN/Forest Lake) (Forest Lake, Minn.) each tallied goals to knot the game at three after two periods of play.
But in the third, it was all Gustavus, as the Gusties tallied a power play goal just over four minutes in and added an even goal at 7:25 and an empty net goal at 19:09 to hand the Pointers their third straight defeat, 6-3.
The Pointers outshot the Gusties in all but the third period and finished with eight more shots on goal, but Gustavus netminder Josh Swartout tallied 26 saves. UWSP goalkeeper Thomas Spear (Janesville) recorded 15 saves in net for the Pointers.
UW-Stevens Point (8-5) is now off for the winter break but return to action on Jan. 2-3 when they host the final two games of their eight-game home stand against Minnesota-Crookston and St. Olaf. Both games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. starts.
