ELMHURST, Ill. - UW-Stevens Point shot just 38 percent from the floor and 25 percent from three-point land but the sixth-ranked Pointers managed to build a 17-point first half lead and cruise to a 62-53 victory over the seventh ranked Bluejays of Elmhurst College on Saturday night in non-conference men's hoops action.
After Elmhurst took the early 4-2 advantage, UW-Stevens Point went on a 23-5 run to open up a 17-point lead on the host Bluejays. Elmhurst battled back, holding the Pointers scoreless for the final six minutes of the first half, cutting the deficit to just seven, 25-18, heading into the locker room.
In the second half, Elmhurst cut their deficit to just two points on three occasions, but the Pointers opened an 11-point lead, 49-38, with 7:59 remaining in the half and held the Bluejays at bay, cruising to the nine-point victory.
Leading the way for the Pointers was
Khalifa El-Amin (Milwaukee/Rufus King) (Milwaukee), who scored a game-high 25 points on 7-of-15 shooting including five three-pointers and 11 first-half points, and added five assists and three rebounds.
Matt Moses (Fond du Lac/St. Mary Springs) (Fond du Lac) was the only other Pointer to score in double figures, adding 11 points while
Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) (Minocqua) hauled in a team high 11 rebounds.
After scoring only two points in the first half, Brent Ruch bounced back to finish with 14 points and six rebounds to lead the Bluejays in the loss. Zack Boyd added 10 points while Burks and Robert Strzemp finished with seven points apiece.
UW-Stevens Point's Moses also saw his school-record 35 consecutive made free throw streak come to an end, as the front half of his only two free throw attempts of the night rattled out.
UW-Stevens Point (7-1, 2-0 WIAC) return to action on Saturday, Dec. 20 when they host Edgewood College at 7 p.m. in the Quandt Fieldhouse.
