Pointers Soar Past Eagles 82-69

STEVENS POINT - Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee/Rufus King) (Milwaukee) and Evan Sweeney (Appleton/West) (Appleton) recorded career-highs with 17 points each as UW-Stevens Point defeated UW-La Crosse 82-69 in WIAC action Wednesday night at Quandt Fieldhouse.

The Pointers went 32-for-53 from the field and used 45 second half points to pick up their second WIAC victory of the year.

It was back-and-forth early on, but the Pointers used an 11-3 run midway through the first half to take a 24-17 lead with 8:30 left in the first half. But the Eagles kept it tight, trailing only 37-29 into the break.

The Eagles kept the pressure on early in the second half, closing the gap to two at 43-41 with 15:45 showing on the clock. The Pointers responded by scoring the next seven points and extending the lead to nine.

La Crosse crawled back to within five at 60-55 with 7:46 left, but it was all Pointers from there as they went on a 20-8 spurt to close out the victory.

The Pointers (6-1, 2-0 WIAC) were led by Bryan Beamish (Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) (Wisconsin Rapids) who scored a team-high 18 points and grabbed five boards in addition to four blocks.

The Eagles (4-3, 0-1 WIAC) were led by Tony Mane's game-high 22 points, while Andy Merklein pitched in 11 points and seven boards.

In their next matchup, the No. 6 Pointers will travel to take on No. 7 Elmhurst College on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
