STEVENS POINT - The UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team captured their 12th Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Blugolds of UW-Eau Claire 3-1 at the Point Soccer Bowl. The win also earns the Pointers the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Eau Claire controlled the ball early and got on the board first, scoring just 2:31 into the game as Jamie Schiesel (Plymouth, Minn.) found Alyssa Walker (Madison) for the header goal, her first goal of the season.
The Pointers tied the game at the 28:48 mark when
Jackie Spees (Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) (Wis. Rapids) found
Leah Larson (Mincoqua, WI/Lakeland) (Minocqua) as she headed the ball home for just her second goal of the season.
Neither team was able to gain an advantage for the remainder of the first half, as both defenses kept the others offense at bay, keeping the score 1-1 heading to halftime.
In the second half,
Kaylee Weise (Brookfield/East) (Brookfield) gave the Pointers the lead when she found the back of the net after beating an Eau Claire defender at the 55:46 mark, as the Pointers went up 2-1.
The Pointers added another goal to their total at the 71:26 mark as a misplayed ball by a Blugold defender resulted in an own goal, giving the Pointers their final advantage, 3-1.
Pam Luckow (Kaukauna/Kaukauna) (Kaukauna) recorded four saves in the victory for the Pointers while Allie Rivard (Plymouth, Minn.), who was also named the Judy Kruckman WIAC Women's Soccer Scholar-Athlete award-winner, recorded six.
The championship for the Pointers (17-3) is their first since 2004. The Pointers will now await the selection committee's decision to see who they will face in the opening round of the Division III Championship Tournament next week.
