STEVENS POINT - The Pointers extended their winning streak to five games on Saturday evening, defeating the Tommies of the University of St. Thomas 2-1 on Parents Night at K.B. Willett Arena, thanks to a
Russell Law (Bay City, MI/Shattuck (MN))'s (Bay City, Mich.) goal with :33 remaining in the third period.
The Pointers struck first when
Mike Sand (Port Huron, MI/Port Huron) (Port Huron, Mich.) scored at 18:25 off Law and
Jonathan Ralph (Chester, NJ/Shattuck St. Mary's) (Chester, N.J.) passes to take the early 1-0 advantage on the No. 5 ranked Tommies.
UST's Sean Bryant answered back, as time was running down in the first half, scoring a power play goal off assists by John Jacques and Andrew Kappers, knotting the score at 1-1 after one period of play.
After both defenses did not allow a goal in the second period and much of the third, Law found the back of the net as time wound down to give the Pointers their fifth straight win.
This marks the first time UW-Stevens Point have started the season 5-0-0 since the 1991-92 season, when they started 7-0-1, winning their first five before a 3-3 tie against Bemidji State.
The Pointers will next face defending Division III National Champion St. Norbert College on Friday, Nov. 14 in De Pere at 7 p.m. The Tommies have next week off before facing Augsberg on Nov. 22 at 7 p.m.
