Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee/Rufus King) (Milwaukee) was again the hero, as he hauled in a 28 yard pass from
Jared Beckwith (Baraboo/Baraboo) (Baraboo) with :06 left and
Ryan Graboski (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) (Woodbury, Minn.) added an extra point as the Pointers came from 14 down to defeat the Blugolds of UW-Eau Claire 21-20.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Blugolds scored the only points of the first half off a 29-yard pass from Kyle Paulson found Cory Sartorelli to give UWEC the early 7-0 advantage.
In the second half, it was again Sartorelli, who this time scored on a 43-yard run to give the Blugolds a 14-0 edge with 12:12 to go in the third quarter.
The Pointers scored their first points of the day with 4:10 left in the third when Jenkins hauled in a 15-yard pass from Beckwith to make the score 14-7 Eau Claire. At the start of the fourth, it was again Jenkins, this time on a 7-yard reception from Beckwith to tie the score at 14-14 with 14:19 remaining in the game.
After the Blugold scored with :28 left but failed at the extra point try to take a 20-14 lead, UW-Stevens Point's
Jack Marx (Scandinavia/Iola-Scandinavia) (Scandinavia) took the ensuing kickoff 23 yards to the 39 yard line and a 15-yard face mask penalty gave the Pointers the ball on the Eau Claire half of the field at the 46-yard line with :24 remaining in the game. Beckwith then hit Jenkins for an 18-yard first down and then again on the 28-yard score to knot the score at 20-20. Graboski then added the game-winning extra point for the Pointers to give UWSP their sixth win of the 2008 season by three points or less, 21-20.
For the Pointers, Jenkins finished with 12 catches for 156 yards and three scores. Beckwith finished 246 yards through the air completing 19 of his 30 pass attempts and all three touchdowns to Jenkins.
Mike Ferron (Racine/Horlick) (Racine) had 23 carries for 66 yards with a long of 14.
For Eau Claire, Sartorelli finished the day with 31 carries for 155 yards and two touchdowns rushing. He also had four receptions for 67 yards and one score.
UW-Stevens Point (8-1, 5-1 WIAC) holds their lead over UW-Whitewater for first place in the WIAC standings as the Pointers hold the tiebreaker against the Warhawks for the league title. The Pointers host UW-La Crosse on Nov. 15 in their final regular-season game 1 p.m. at Community Stadium. UW-Eau Claire (5-4, 3-3 WIAC), losers of two straight, will play UW-Stout in Menomonie next weekend in their season finale.
