STEVENS POINT - The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey streak remained unbeaten as they defeated St. Mary's University 3-0 Friday night at K.B. Willett Arena.
The Pointers scored single goals in the first, second, and third period, while
Thomas Speer (Janesville/James Madison) (Janesville) recorded his first solo shutout of the season.
Stevens Point got on the board early when
Russell Law (Bay City, MI/Shattuck (MN)) (Bay City, MI) knocked home a power-play goal on passes from
Jonathan Ralph (Chester, NJ/Shattuck St. Mary's) (Chester, NJ) and
Tim Manthey (Anoka, MN/Anoka) (Anoka, MN) just 5:12 into the game.
The Pointers extended the lead to 2-0 in the second period when
Ross Johnson (International Falls, MN/Falls) (International Falls, MN) scored on assists from Ralph and Brett Beckfield (Plymouth, MN).
The final Pointer goal was scored with just three seconds remaining on the clock when
Sean Fish (Ramsey, MN/Anoka) (Ramsey, MN) scored an unassisted short-handed empty net goal to seal the victory.
Speer had 16 saves in the shutout, while Scott Pederson had 31 saves for the Cardinals
The 4-0 start by the Pointers is their best record to begin a season since 1991-92. They will look to continue their winning ways Saturday, when they host St. Thomas on Parent's Night at K.B. Willett arena at 7:30 p.m.
