EAU CLAIRE – UW-Stevens Point shot an impressive 70.6 percent from the floor in the first half to jump out to the early 53-23 lead and held the Norse of Luther College to just 46 points on the evening as the Pointers improved to 4-0 with a 75-46 victory in the opening round of the UW-Eau Claire Thanksgiving Showcase.
After jumping out to the early lead, the Norse defense and poor shooting kept the Pointers scoreless until the 11:42 mark in the second half before the Pointers scored 22 points in the second half to cruise to the victory and improve to 4-0 for the fourth straight season.
Jessi Sporle (Mineral Point/Mineral Point) (Mineral Point) led the way for the Pointers, scoring a team-high 20 points and added five assists and three rebounds in the win.
Ashley Baker (Vesper/Pittsville) (Vesper) added 15 and
Britta Petersen (Luck/Luck) (Luck) added 10 to round out the players who scored in double figures for UWSP.
The Pointers advance to face UW-Eau Claire, 80-45 winners over St. Olaf, in the championship game of the 2008 UW-Eau Claire Thanksgiving Showcase at the W.L.Zorn Arena in Eau Claire. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
