Pointers Tame Lions

STEVENS POINT – The Pointers used four third period goals to break open a 2-0 lead and defeat the Lions of FInlandia University 6-1 in non-conference men's hockey action on Saturday evening. The Pointers improve to 8-2 overall with the win while the Lions slip to 4-4.

The Pointers used power play goals from Russsell Law (Bay City, Mich.) in the first and Luke Nesper (Eagle River, WI/Northland Pines) (Eagle River) in the second to jump out to the early 2-0 lead after two periods of play.

In the third, after killing off a 5-on-2 power play opportunity Finlandia held, Sean Fish (Ramsey, MN/Anoka) (Ramsey, Minn.) tallied another power play goal for the Pointers, giving UWSP the 3-0 advantage with 4:12 gone by in the third.

Nemanja Jankovic answered for the Lions, cutting the visitors deficit to two, 3-1, just two minutes later when he scored an even goal, but UW-Stevens Point answered, as Law, Jon Madden (Brighton, MI/Howell) (Brighton, Mich.) and Matt Stendahl (Forest Lake, MN/Forest Lake) (Forest Lake, Minn.) all notched goals to blow the game open and give the Pointers the 6-1 victory.

Marcus Paulson (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) (Eden Prairie, Minn.) tallied the win in net for the Pointers, recording 18 saves in his first start of the 2008-09 season.

The Pointers next host NCHA leading UW-Superior and St. Scholastica on Dec. 5-6 at K.B. Willett Arena. Both games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. starts.
