Pointers Rebound with 5-3 Win Over River Falls

STEVENS POINT - For the second night in a row, the Pointers tallied three goals in the first period, but this time added one in each of the next two periods and defeated the Falcons of UW-River Falls 5-3 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) action Saturday evening.

Ross Johnson (International Falls, MN/Falls) (International Falls, Minn.) tallied the game's first goal for the Pointers 1:30 and Luke Nesper (Eagle River, WI/Northland Pines) (Eagle River) and Travis Erstad (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) (Stevens Point) added goals at 2:00 and 17:50 respectively as the Pointers built their early lead.

In the Second period, UWRF's John Bullis got the visitors on the board, scoring at the 3:44 mark to cut the Falcon deficit to 3-1. But John Madden (Brighton, Mich) added a goal in the second to push the advantage back to three, 4-1, at 18:49.

In the third, the Pointers put the nail in the coffin, as Russell Law (Bay City, MI/Shattuck (MN)) (Bay City, Mich.) tallied a short-handed goal just 1:29 in to give the Pointers the 5-1 lead.

River Falls added two power play goals late in the period, but it was not enough, as the Pointer defense and Tom Spear (Janesville) held on to pull even in the NCHA at 2-2.

Spear tallied 20 saves on the night while UW-River Falls Tyler Owns took the loss, tallying 11 saves in first period. Stephen Ritter closed out the game, recording 10 saves in 40 minutes of work between the pipes.

UW-Stevens Point (7-2, 2-2 NCHA) play host to the Lions of Finlandia University on Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m. UW-River Falls (1-6-1, 1-3-1 NCHA) will host Marian on Nov. 25 at 7:05 p.m.
