STEVENS POINT - The UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team advanced to the sweet 16 of the 2008 NCAA Division III women's soccer tournament on Sunday, defeating the Duhawks of Loras College 2-0.

UWSP struck early as Vicki Bieschke (Oconomowoc/Waukesha Memorial) (Oconomowoc) scored off a ball that ricocheted off a Loras defender and gave the Pointers the 1-0 advantage just 6:45 into the first half.

Emily Walsh (Waunakee/Waunakee) (Waunakee) added a goal in the 34th minute, scoring off a Kaylee Weise (Brookfield/East) (Brookfield) pass to give the Pointers the 2-0 advantage before the end of the first half.

In the second half, it was all Pointer defense, limiting Loras to six shots, one on goal, on their way to the 2-0 victory.

This marks the second straight season that UWSP has reached the round of 16 in the NCAA Division III women's soccer tournament and their fifth trip overall. The Pointers made back-to-back trips in 1993 and 1994, made the trip in 2000, and again last season. Three of those previous four times the Pointers advanced the Elite Eight round (1993, 1994 and 2000).

UW-Stevens Point (19-3) will next face Eastern University of Pennsylvania, who advanced to the Sweet 16 by virtue of a 1-0 win over Wheaton (Mass.) and a 2-1 defeat of Rowan. The Pointers and Eagles will meet on Nov. 22 on the campus of Messiah College in Grantham, Pa. at 12:30 p.m. CST. The winner of that sectional game will face the winner of the Messiah vs. University of Chicago winner on Nov. 23 at 12:00 p.m. CST.
