ARKDALE – For the second straight season, the UW-Stevens Point women's golf team is the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Champion, overcoming a 12 shot deficit to capture their third conference title in school history and secure a bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.
The team overcame a 12 stroke deficit after day one of the tournament to bring home their second consecutive WIAC title, becoming just the third team in the conference archives to win back-to-back championships, joining UW-Eau Claire and UW-Oshkosh.
The Pointers shot a nine hole 161 on the tournament's final day to capture the lead and the victory. Originally scheduled for 54 holes, the event was shortened to 45 holes due to inclement weather during the final round.
“No one on our team thought we couldn't do this,” said head coach Matt Interbartolo on his team's approach to the tournament. “We came out after day one in a negative position and showed that we were a first class team by putting ourselves into a position to win.”
In third after a day one, shooting a 341, the Pointers found themselves 12 strokes back of UW-Eau Claire and three strokes behind UW-Whitewater. Day two saw the Pointers move into second place, firing a 320, closing the gap to 10 strokes heading into the tournament's final day as Eau Claire still held the lead.
The Pointers turned in a final round 161, leapfrogging Eau Claire to capture the title. Freshman
Nacheynah Green (Poynette/) (Poynette) led the way, as she had done all tournament, with a three-day total of 202, finishing tied for second. Junior
Jessica Urban (Hartland/Arrowhead) (Hartland) turned in a 38, the final day's lowest score, for a three-day total 203, good for fourth.
“Nacheynah had a great showing,” said Interbartolo on the performance of his top finisher. “All season we have showed the ability to bail each other out and when we needed someone to step up, it has happened. This was her turn and what she did is remarkable.”
Sophomore
Michelle Pascavis (Waukesha/South) (Waukesha) finished the day with a 42 and a three-day total of 207, good for sixth place while freshman
Danelle Olson (Detroit Lakes, MN/Detroit Lakes) (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) fired a 210 for the tournament, finishing ninth and senior
Amanda Dlugopolski (Appleton/East) (Appleton) finished in 16th with a three-day total of 219.
This is the third conference title for the Pointers (1997, 2007, 2008) and secures the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship that will be held at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla., May 13-16, 2009.
