Garrett Suter (Madison/Oregon) (Madison) scored an early power-play goal and
Tom Upton (Austin, TX/Westwood) (Austin, Texas) and
Jon Madden (Brighton, MI/Howell) (Brighton, Mich.) each added goals of their own as UW-Stevens Point defeated Concordia (Minn.) 3-1 in non-conference men's hockey action Friday evening.
Suter took advantage of a five-on-four opportunity at 8:13 in the first period off a
Mike Sand (Port Huron, MI/Port Huron) (Port Huron, Mich.) pass, giving the Pointers the early advantage in the first period.
In the second period, Upton connected off passes from
Nick Bydal (East Grand Forks, MN/East Grand Forks) (East Grand Forks, Minn.) and Madden to give the Pointers a 2-0 edge. Just before the end of the period, the Cobbers got on the board, scoring a goal on a five-on-three opportunity, sneaking a goal past Pointer netminder Tom Speer (Janesville) to make the score 2-1 after two periods.
In the third, it was Madden's turn, as he connected on his third goal of the season off assists from Upton and Bydal to give the Pointers the two-goal advantage 6:11 into the period.
From there, Speer closed the door on Concordia, recording 12 of his 28 saves in the third as the Pointers cruised to the 3-1 victory.
The Pointers, 2-0 for the first time since the start of the 2005-06 season, return to action on Nov. 8 when they face St. John's (Minn.) at 2 p.m. in Collegeville, Minn.
