Pointers Get Revenge on the Falcons

Box Score

RIVER FALLS – After dropping all three games last season to UW-River Falls, including in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament, the 11th-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team got some revenge tonight as it defeated the Falcons 83-70 at the Karges Center.

The Pointers improve to 12-1 overall and are 3-1 in conference action. The Falcons drop to 6-8 overall and 0-5 in WIAC action. Stevens Point has won seven straight games. It's the longest winning streak since they won 10 straight during the 2004-05 season.

The Pointers led or tied for the first eight minutes of the first half. Haley Houghton (Wausau/Wausau East) (Sr.-Wausau/East) scored 10 of the first 15 points for Stevens Point. The Falcons took its first lead after a jumper made the score 18-17 with 11 minutes remaining in the half.

The Falcons held the lead until four minutes left in the half when Ali Nicastro (Mondovi/Mondovi) (Sr.-Mondovi) tied it up at the line and Britta Petersen (Luck/Luck) (Fr.-Luck) hit a free throw herself to make the score 27-26 Pointers. All of that was part of a 9-0 run that put Stevens Point up for good. The Pointers outscored the Falcons 12-3 to end the half to make the halftime score 41-31.

The Pointers shot 54 % in the first half, while the Falcons only shot 37 %. Stevens Point had a 14-6 scoring edge in the paint. Haley Houghton (Wausau/Wausau East) scored 15 of her game-high 19 points in the half.

River Falls kept within striking distance for the first 12 minutes of the second half, cutting the Pointer lead down to seven on a number of occasions. However, the Pointers put the game out of reach with an 8-0 run with less than six minutes to play. Stevens Point led by as much as 17 with three minutes left and cruised to an 83-70 victory.

The Pointers shot 62.5 % in the second half to finish at 58 % for the game. That marks the second straight game that the Pointers have had a season-high shooting percentage. The Falcons were 37 % shooting for the game. The Stevens Point bench had 23 points, compared to just 11 points by the Falcon bench.

Along with Houghton, Chelsea Kranz (Columbus/Columbus) (Sr.-Columbus) and Britta Petersen (Luck/Luck) each scored in double-figures. Kranz finished with 14 points, while Petersen had a career-high 13 points, 12 of which coming in the second half. Petersen also had a career-high seven rebounds to lead Stevens Point. Katie Webber (Reedsburg/Reedsburg) (Jr.-Reedsburg) had a team-high five assists. Kelli Hilt had 18 points to lead River Falls.

The Pointers return to Berg Gym Saturday when they host UW-Platteville. The game begins at 3 p.m. and is the first game of a men's and women's doubleheader.
