Pointers Get Back on Track with Convincing Victory

 STEVENS POINT – The 14th-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team got back to its winning ways tonight as it cruised to an 87-44 victory over UW-River Falls at Quandt Fieldhouse.

 The Pointers improve to 10-3 overall and 2-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The Falcons fall to 7-7 overall and 1-4 in WIAC play. The Pointers have now beaten the Falcons 25 of the last 26 times they have squared off. The 43-point margin of victory is the largest this season for Stevens Point and is the biggest since a 45-point win over River Falls last season.

 The Pointers came right out of the gate and were very aggressive defensively. The Pointers had a 7-2 lead early as Khalifa El-Amin (Milwaukee/Rufus King) (Jr.-Milwaukee/Rufus King) had four of the first seven points. The score was 15-4 at the first media timeout as Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) (Jr.-Minocqua/Lakeland) had eight of the 15 points, including a pair of three-pointers.

 Stevens Point kept on rolling as Drew Jackson (Milwaukee/Rufus King) (Jr.-Milwaukee/Rufus King) brought the house down after throwing down an alley-oop dunk from El-Amin. The Pointers had a 28-8 lead with 9:46 left in the first half. The Pointers ended the half on an 8-0 run to take a 46-19 lead at the break.

 Stevens Point forced 15 River Falls' turnovers in the first half, which led to 23 Pointer points. The Pointers shot 52 % from the field in the half, while the Falcons were held to 36 %.

 The Pointers used another 8-0 run at the beginning of the second half to extend its margin to 32. The lead grew to as much as 45 after a Nick Krull (Marshall/Marshall) (Fr.-Marshall) three-point field goal with 28 seconds left.

 The Pointers shot 48 % from the field for the game and were 21-of-25 from the free throw line. The Falcons shot 32 % for the game and were just 2-for-14 on three-point attempts. Stevens Point scored 31 points off of 24 Falcon turnovers.

 Steve Hicklin (Sussex/Hamilton) (Sr.-Sussex/Hamilton) led the way for the Pointers with 16 points. Hicklin was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Bryan Beamish (Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) (Jr.-Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) added 12 points and Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) chipped in with 10. Drew Jackson (Milwaukee/Rufus King) and Nick Krull (Marshall/Marshall) each had five rebounds to lead the Pointers. Hicklin and El-Amin both had a team-high five assists. Brady Hannigan had nine points to lead River Falls.

 The Pointers will face UW-Platteville on Saturday at Quandt Fieldhouse. The game is scheduled to tip-off at approximately 5 p.m. following the women's game.
