STEVENS POINT – The 11th-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team used a 21-0 run from the end of the first half to the beginning of the second half to down UW-Oshkosh 79-47 today at Berg Gym.
The Pointers improve to 11-1 overall and 2-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The Titans fall to a record of 6-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference. The Pointers have now won five straight games against the Titans and have won six straight overall.
Stevens Point led throughout as Laura Neuenfeldt (Two Rivers/Two Rivers) (Sr.-Two Rivers) began the game with three-pointer. The Pointers went up 5-0 after a pair of Haley Houghton (Wausau/Wausau East) (Sr.-Wausau/East) free throws. With the score 11-8 with 14 minutes left in the half, the Pointers went on a 6-0 run to extend their lead back to nine with 11:38 on the clock. Stevens Point then went on a 7-0 run to make the score 26-12 with seven minutes left.
With the score 28-18 with 4:21 remaining in the first half, the Pointers scored the final 11 points of the first half to make the halftime score 39-18. Houghton had eight straight points during that span.
The Pointers forced 15 Oshkosh turnovers in the half that led to 16 points. Stevens Point shot 50 % in the half and was 10-for-11 from the free throw line. The Titans shot 30 % from the field.
The Pointers then came out in the second half and scored the first 10 points to conclude a 21-0 run and make the score 49-18 with over 17 minutes left. Stevens Point extended its lead to as much as 37 with nine minutes left and cruised to a 79-47 victory.
The Pointers shot a season-high 54 % from the field, including 7-of-16 from beyond the arc. Stevens Point finished an efficient 16-of-19 from the free throw line. The Titans shot 33 % from the field and were 0-for-15 from behind the three-point line. The Pointer bench outscored the Titan bench 42-8.
The Pointers once again showed a lot of balance as they only had two players score in double figures and 13 different players score. Haley Houghton (Wausau/Wausau East) led the way with 14 points, while Chelsea Kranz (Columbus/Columbus) (Sr.-Columbus) had to 10 points. Ashley Baker (Vesper/Pittsville) (Jr.-Pittsville) had a season-high six rebounds to lead the Pointers. Whitney Tyriver led Oshkosh with a game-high 16 points.
The Pointers go on the road Wednesday night when they take on UW-River Falls. The tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
