STEVENS POINT – The third-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team fell tonight to No. 18-ranked UW-Oshkosh 73-62 at Quandt Fieldhouse.
The Pointers fall to 9-3 overall and 1-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The Titans improve to 10-2 overall and remain undefeated in the conference with a 4-0 record. The Pointers have now lost back-to-back games for the first time since January 28, 2006. Oshkosh wins for the second straight year at Quandt Fieldhouse.
The Titans jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but the Pointers responded with a 6-0 run following a Drew Jackson (Milwaukee/Rufus King) (Jr.-Milwaukee/Rufus King) dunk to take the lead. The game remained close until the Titans went on a 7-0 run led by two Matt Miller three-pointers to go up 34-23 with three minutes left in the half. The Titans went into halftime with a 38-27 advantage.
The Pointers shot 41 % in the first half, while the Titans shot 55 % and were 5-for-9 on three-point attempts. Matt Miller was 4-for-4 from beyond the arc. Stevens Point outscored Oshkosh 16-8 in the paint.
The Titans came out after halftime and hit their first two shots. The Pointers were unable to get the score into single digits. It looked like the Pointers had some momentum halfway through the second half after Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) (Jr.-Minocqua/Lakeland) hit a couple of jumpers to cut the lead to 12. However, following an Oshkosh timeout the Titans scored six straight points and quieted the crowd. The Titans led by as much as 19 with 8:39 remaining in the game. Oshkosh went on to win by a score of 73-62.
The Pointers shot 56 % in the second half and finished at 48 % for the game. Stevens Point was just 3-for-16 on three-point attempts. The Titans shot 52 % for the game and were 8-for-16 from beyond the arc. The top free throw shooting team in the conference finished at 15-for-17 from the line.
Matt Moses (Fond du Lac/St. Mary Springs) (So.-Fond du Lac/St. Mary Springs) scored a career-high 14 points and Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) also had 14 to lead the Pointers. Bryan Beamish (Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) (Jr.-Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) added 13 points. Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) also led the team with six rebounds. D.J. Marsh scored a game-high 23 points, while Matt Miller added 19 points.
The Pointers remain at home Wednesday night when they host UW-River Falls. That game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. in Quandt Fieldhouse.
