Second Period Goals Rally the Pointers Past Gustavus

 ST. PETER, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team scored a pair of second period goals to rally past Gustavus Adolphus (MN) by a score 2-1 tonight at the Don Roberts Ice Rink.

 The Pointers improve to 9-5-1 overall and are now 3-0-1 in their last four games. The Gusties fall to a record of 6-6-0 overall. This is Stevens Point's first win over Gustavus, since they beat the Gusties 5-3 in the 2004-05 season. The Pointers are now 3-0 against the top three teams of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). The Pointers had 19 days off since they last played game.

 After a scoreless first period, the Gusties got on the scoreboard first with a power play goal by Ben Ollila with 11:17 on the clock. The Pointers responded with a power play goal of their own when Jonathan Ralph (Chester, NJ/Shattuck St. Mary's) (Chester, NJ/Shattuck St. Mary's) hit a slap shot that was redirected past the goaltender by Taylor Guay (Boulder, CO/Boulder) (Jr.-Boulder, CO) with 8:38 remaining in the second period. It was Guay's second goal of the season, both of which have come on the power play.

 The Pointers took the lead for good when after a great save by Thomas Speer (Janesville/James Madison) (Fr.-Janesville/James Madison), Pat Lee (Schaumburg, IL/) (So.-Schaumburg, IL) brought the puck up the ice and scored a fantastic goal with 4:31 on the clock. It was Lee's team-high ninth goal of the season. Ralph and Andy Cankar (Lockport, IL/Lockport) (Jr.-Lockport, IL) had the assist on the goal.

 The third period was evenly played as Gustavus pulled their goaltender late, but could not tie the game up as the Pointers won by a score of 2-1.

 The Pointers outshot the Gusties 25-20 in the contest. Thomas Speer (Janesville/James Madison) has 19 saves in net to improve to 7-2-1 this season. Matt Lopes had 23 saves in the loss for Gustavus. The Pointers committed five penalties for 10 minutes, while the Gusties had three penalties for six minutes.

 The Pointers return home next weekend for a couple of non-conference games. They will face Hamline University on Friday night and Augsburg College on Saturday night. The Hamline game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Willett Arena Friday night.
