STEVENS POINT – The second-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team had no trouble once again with Concordia University, defeating the Falcons 8-1 today at Ice Hawks Arena.
The Pointers are now 15-0-1 and 11-0-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA). The 17 straight games without a loss for the Pointers is the longest streak in all of NCAA Women's Hockey. The Falcons fall to a record of 0-15-2 overall and 0-12-0 in the NCHA.
Dana Carothers (Burnsville, MN/Burnsville) (Fr.-Burnsville, MN) put the Pointers on the scoreboard a little over four minutes into the game with an even-handed goal. Michelle Sosnowski (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield Central) (Jr.-Plainfield, IL/Central) had the assist. A little less than four minutes later Kellye Nelson (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) (So.-Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) put the Pointers up 2-0. Jamie Lewandowski (Rolling Meadows, IL/Fremd) (Sr.-Rolling Meadows, IL/Fremd) had the assist. Trish Piskula (Antigo/Antigo) (Jr.-Antigo) added an unassisted goal halfway through the first period to make the score 3-0. Carothers scored her second goal of the period at the 3:17-mark to give Stevens Point a 4-0 lead at the first intermission.
In the second period, Jess Suter (Waunakee/Waunakee) (Sr.-Waunakee) put a crawling puck in the goal crease in the net for a power play goal to make the score 5-0. Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) (Jr.-Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) added another power play goal at 6:27 to increase the Pointer lead to 6-0. The goal was the 50th of Grossmann's Pointer career.
Sarah Phillips (Kelowna, B.C./St. George's School (RI)) (So.-Kelowna, B.C./St. George's School, RI) added a third power play goal in the third period on a slap shot to make the score 7-0. The Falcons then pulled their goalie with over five minutes remaining and Trish Piskula (Antigo/Antigo) scored her second goal of the game on the empty net to make it 8-0. Still with an extra-attacker, the Falcons finally put the puck in the net with 2:38 remaining when former Pointer Jackie Drews scored. That would be the final as the Pointers won 8-1.
Ann Hulme (Shaker Heights, OH/Phillips Exeter (NH)) (So.-Shaker Heights, OH/Phillips Exeter, NH) played just one period in net, but still received the win and improves to 9-0-0 this year. Danielle Vaness (Oxford/Portage) (So.-Oxford/Portage) played the final two periods and had eight saves. Stevens Point finished 3-for-5 on the power play.
The Pointers will travel to face UW-Eau Claire Friday night. The action begins at 7 p.m.
