OSHKOSH – The 10th-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team fell behind early and could never recover as UW-Oshkosh shocked the Pointers by a final score of 59-42 this afternoon at the Kolf Sports Center.
The Pointers fall to 15-3 overall this season and 6-3 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) action. The last time the Pointers lost back-to-back games was at the beginning of last season when River Falls and Whitewater downed them. The Titans improve to 8-10 overall and 3-6 in WIAC play. The Titans snap a five-game losing streak to Stevens Point.
The Pointers started out cold from the field missing 12 of their first 15 shots. Stevens Point had just four points halfway through the first half and trailed 16-6 with seven minutes remaining. Haley Houghton (Wausau/Wausau East) (Sr.-Wausau/East) hit a three-pointer with 31 seconds left in the first half to make the halftime score 20-13.
The Pointers shot just 25 % in the first half and did not attempt a free throw. The Titans were not much better at 33 %. The Oshkosh bench had a 10-2 advantage over the Pointer bench.
Stevens Point cut the lead to five after a Jessi Sporle (Mineral Point/Mineral Point) (Jr.-Mineral Point) layup, but the Titans would open the second half on a 17-6 run to take a 37-19 lead with 11:46 remaining. The Pointers did not go away as they cut the lead down to seven after a Janell Van Gomple (DeForest/DeForest) (Jr.-DeForest) three-pointer with 3:44 left in the game. However, the Titans extended the lead back to double-digits and ended the game on an 8-0 run to make the final score 59-42.
The Pointers shot a season-low 29 % from the field, including 3-for-19 on three-point attempts. The Titans finished 38 % for the game and were 17-for-19 from the free throw line. Oshkosh also had a 46-26 advantage on the glass.
Chelsea Kranz (Columbus/Columbus) (Sr.-Columbus) was the only Pointer to score in double-figures as she had 10 points. Kranz also had a team-high five rebounds. Erin Baganz had a game-high 14 points for the Titans.
The Pointers return to Berg Gym on Wednesday night when they host UW-River Falls. The tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
