Pointers Tie No. 1-ranked St. Norbert

Box Score

DE PERE – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with No. 1-ranked St. Norbert College tonight at the Cornerstone Community Center.

The Pointers record now stands at 13-5-2 overall and 4-4-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA). The Green Knights' record is now 17-1-2 overall and 7-0-2 in the NCHA. The Pointers run their unbeaten streak to nine games, while the Knights extend their unbeaten streak to 17 games.

Just like the first meeting at Willett Arena earlier this season, the Pointers scored first when Brett Beckfeld (Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) (Jr.-Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) scored a power play goal to make the score 1-0 with 2:06 left in the first period. Pat Lee (Schaumburg, IL/) (So.-Schaumburg, IL) and Garrett Suter (Madison/Oregon) (Fr.-Madison/Oregon) had the assists. Just 18 seconds later, Stevens Point struck again as Sean Fish (Ramsey, MN/Anoka) (Jr.-Ramsey, MN/Anoka) scored to give the Pointers a 2-0 lead at the first intermission. Russell Law (Bay City, MI/Shattuck (MN)) (Jr.-Bay City, MI/Shattuck) and Jonathan Ralph (Chester, NJ/Shattuck St. Mary's) (Jr.-Chester, NJ/Shattuck St. Mary's) had the assists.

The Pointers committed a tripping penalty at the end of the first period, which meant that the Green Knights would be on the power play at the beginning of the second period. St. Norbert capitalized with a power play goal by Matt Boyd over a minute into the period to make the score 2-1. That is where we stood after two periods.

In the third period, the Green Knights tied the contest up when Marc Belanger scored halfway through the period to make the score 2-2. Neither team committed a penalty in the third period and the game would head to overtime.

In overtime, the Pointers would get four shots on goal, including a couple of great chances, but they could not deliver as the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

St. Norbert had a 34-24 edge in shots on goal. Thomas Speer (Janesville/James Madison) (Fr.-Janesville/James Madison) had 32 saves to earn the tie. Kyle Jones had 22 saves for the Green Knights. The top two teams in penalty minutes in the NCHA combined for 20 penalties. The Pointers were 1-for-7 on the power play, while St. Norbert was 1-for-5.

The Pointers return to Willett Arena next Friday when they host UW-River Falls. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:30 p.m.
