Oshkosh Hands the Pointers a Defeat

OSHKOSH – The seventh-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team never led today as they fell for the second time this season against 20th-ranked UW-Oshkosh by a score of 73-61 at the Kolf Sports Center.

The Pointers fall to an overall record of 14-4 and a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) record of 6-3. The Titans improve to 13-5 overall this season and 7-2 in conference play. Oshkosh sweeps the Pointers in the regular season for the first time since the 1997-98 season.

The Titans jumped out to a 7-2 lead and did not relinquish the lead the rest of the way. Oshkosh led by as many as 10 with fewer than 15 minutes left in the first half. After trailing by eight with less than 12 minutes left, the Pointers went on a 6-0 run and cut the lead to 26-24 after a Khalifa El-Amin (Milwaukee/Rufus King) (Jr.-Milwaukee/Rufus King) three-pointer. The margin would be no greater than five the final 10 minutes of the first half, but the Titans held the lead and went into halftime up by a score of 37-32.

Stevens Point shot 44 % in the first half and was 7-for-14 on three-point attempts. The Titans shot 48 % in the half and had a 20-6 scoring edge in the paint. The Pointer bench had a 15-0 advantage over Oshkosh's bench.

The Titans grew their lead to 11 three minutes into the second half. A Louis Hurd (Portage/Portage) (Fr.-Portage) three-pointer cut the lead down to six with 15:38 remaining. However, Oshkosh followed that with a 7-0 run to take a 13-point lead. Stevens Point could not recover from that as they were unable to cut the lead below double-digits the rest of the game. The Titans would go on to win by a score of 73-61.

Stevens Point finished at 43 % shooting for the game. The Titans shot 51 % for the game and were 16-for-17 from the free throw line. Oshkosh also had a 37-22 advantage on the boards.

Khalifa El-Amin (Milwaukee/Rufus King) led the way for Stevens Point with 14 points. Louis Hurd (Portage/Portage) added 11 points off the bench and had a team-high four rebounds. The Pointers were without second-leading scorer Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) (Jr.-Minocqua/Lakeland) due to an injury suffered against UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday.

Jordan Johnson led the Titans with 18 points and 11 rebounds. D.J. Marsh added 17 points.

The Pointers stay on the road Wednesday night when they face UW-River Falls at the Karges Center. The tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
