Pointers Put up 10 vs. Concordia

STEVENS POINT – The second-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team scored 10 goals for the second consecutive time this season against Concordia University (Wis.), beating the Falcons 10-0 tonight at Ice Hawks Arena.

The Pointers improve to 14-0-1 this season and 10-0-1 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) action. Stevens Point has won 16 consecutive games dating back to last season, which is the second-longest unbeaten streak in team history. The 10-0 victory also matches the largest shutout win in team history. The Pointers defeated Concordia-Moorhead (MN) 10-0 on November 5, 2005. The Falcons fall to 0-14-2 this season and 0-11-0 in the NCHA. Concordia is in its first year as a program.

The Pointers began things with a pair of unassisted goals in the first period by Sarah Phillips (Kelowna, B.C./St. George's School (RI)) (So.-Kelowna, B.C./St. George's School, RI) and Katy Lankey (Baraboo/Baraboo) (Sr.-Baraboo). The score remained 2-0 until the second period when Jessica Edwards (Casco, MI/Richmond) (Fr.-Casco, MI/Richmond) scored 53 seconds into the period on a four-on-four to make the score 3-0. Jenna Daggit (St. Paul Park, MN/Park of Cottage Grove) (Jr.-St. Paul Park, MN/Park of Cottage Grove) had the assist.

Just 29 seconds later, Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) (Jr.-Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) got in the scoring act with a power play goal to give the Pointers a 4-0 lead. Sarah Phillips (Kelowna, B.C./St. George's School (RI)) and Jamie Lewandowski (Rolling Meadows, IL/Fremd) (Sr.-Rolling Meadows, IL/Fremd) had the assists. Jess Suter (Waunakee/Waunakee) (Sr.-Waunakee) followed her own rebound off the post to make the score 5-0 with less than seven minutes left in the second period. Michelle Sosnowski (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield Central) (Jr.-Plainfield, IL/Central) put in a short-handed goal after the Falcons turned the puck over to make the score 6-0. Trish Piskula (Antigo/Antigo) (Jr.-Antigo) got the final goal of the second period after receiving a pass from Jessica Edwards (Casco, MI/Richmond) to make the score 7-0 after two periods.

Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) scored her second goal of the contest, a short-handed goal five minutes into the third period to put the Pointers up 8-0. Grossmann now has a team-high 16 goals this season. Kellye Nelson (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) made the score 9-0 with 6:26 left in the game. The final goal of the night came with six seconds left when Jenna Daggit (St. Paul Park, MN/Park of Cottage Grove) ripped a slap shot past the goaltender for her first goal of the season to make the final 10-0.

Ann Hulme (Shaker Heights, OH/Phillips Exeter (NH)) (So.-Shaker Heights, OH/Phillips Exeter, NH) played two periods and stopped six shots to improve to 8-0-0 this season. Danielle Vaness (Oxford/Portage) (So.-Oxford/Portage) saw her first action in net as a Pointer as she stopped one shot in the third period. Katie Hirsch had 21 saves in the loss for Concordia.

The Pointers will host the Falcons again tomorrow with the puck scheduled to drop at 2:30 p.m. at Ice Hawks Arena.
