Pointers Reach .500 in NCHA Action

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team got back to .500 in the conference tonight with a 4-2 victory over Lake Forest College (Ill.) at the Alumni Memorial Rink.

The Pointers are 13-5-1 overall and 4-4-0 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA). The Pointers run their unbeaten streak to eight games, including five straight wins, which is the most since the 2000-01 season. The Foresters drop to 2-16-1 overall and remain winless in NCHA action with a 0-8-0 record.

Pat Lee (Schaumburg, IL/) (So.-Schaumburg, IL) got the scoring started for the Pointers with an even-handed goal at 8:31 in the first period. Ross Johnson (International Falls, MN/Falls) (Jr.-International Falls, MN/Falls) had the assist. Just 1:19 later Josh Calleja (New Richmond/New Richmond) (So.-New Richmond) put the puck in the net to make the score 2-0 Stevens Point. Shane Foster (Madison/LaFollette) (Jr.-Madison/LaFollette) and Jonathan Ralph (Chester, NJ/Shattuck St. Mary's) (Jr.-Chester, NJ/Shattuck St. Mary's) had the assists.
The Foresters cut the lead in half five minutes into the second period when Adam Love scored a power play goal. The Pointers responded and extended the lead back to a two-goal margin after Pat Lee (Schaumburg, IL/) scored his 13th goal of the season to make the score 3-1.

Matt Stendahl (Forest Lake, MN/Forest Lake) (Jr.-Forest Lake, MN) put the Pointers up 4-1 in the third period with an even-handed goal six minutes into the period. Brett Beckfeld (Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) (Jr.-Plymouth, MN/Armstrong) and Ross Johnson (International Falls, MN/Falls) had the assists. The Foresters would get a power play goal late, but it wasn't enough as the Pointers went on to win 4-2.

Thomas Speer (Janesville/James Madison) (Fr.-Janesville/James Madison) had 16 saves to improve to 11-2-1 this season. Brandon Kohuch had 29 saves in the loss. Both teams combined for 21 penalties. The Pointers were 0-for-8 on the power play, while the Foresters were 2-for-11.

The Pointers remain on the road and will face No.1-ranked St. Norbert College tomorrow night at the Cornerstone Community Center. The action begins at 7 p.m.
