Pointers Swat the Yellowjackets

STEVENS POINT – The 10th-ranked UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team extended its winning streak to 10 games today with an 83-38 beat down of UW-Superior on Alumni Day at Berg Gym.

The Pointers improve to 15-1 this season and are 6-1 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play. The 10 straight wins are the most since the 2004-05 season. The most consecutive wins in team history are 13 during the 1986-87. The Yellowjackets fall to a record of 4-11 overall and 1-6 in conference action. The Pointers have now beaten Superior 25 straight times.

Laura Neuenfeldt (Two Rivers/Two Rivers) (Sr.-Two Rivers) scored the first four points to put Stevens Point up 4-0 early. Superior then got on the scoreboard and that is as close as they got the entire game. Stevens Point went on a 9-0 run to make the score 18-5 with 13 minutes left in the first half. With the score 24-17 Stevens Point with eight minutes left in the half, the Pointers would end with a 20-3 run, including a Megan Pehler (Oregon/Oregon) (Sr.-Oregon) buzzer-beater at the end of the half to go into halftime with a 44-20 advantage.

Stevens Point shot 57 % in the half, including 7-for-15 from behind the three-point line. The Yellowjackets shot just 33 % and committed 14 turnovers. The Pointer bench contributed 20 points in the half.

The Pointers continued to pour it on in the second half as they built the lead steadily throughout. The largest margin of the game was the final score as the Pointers cruised to an 83-38 victory.

Stevens Point finished with a field goal percentage of .579 for the game, while Superior was held to just 27 % shooting. The Pointers outscored the Yellowjackets 24-6 in the paint and scored 30 points off of turnovers. The Pointer bench finished with 45 points.

Haley Houghton (Wausau/Wausau East) (Sr.-Wausau/East) once again led the Pointers in scoring with a game-high 13 points. Chelsea Kranz (Columbus/Columbus) (Sr.-Columbus) was the only other Stevens Point player to score in double-figures as she had 10 points. Ali Nicastro (Mondovi/Mondovi) (Sr.-Mondovi) had a team-high five rebounds. Jessi Sporle (Mineral Point/Mineral Point) (Jr.-Mineral Point) had a nice all-around game with six points, four rebounds, and five assists. Gigi Hudson led the Yellowjackets with 12 points.

The Pointers will be in action next on Wednesday night when they go to Eau Claire for a showdown with the conference-leading Blugolds. The tip-off begins at 7 p.m. in Zorn Arena.
